Navigating a Complex Transportation Solution for an Industrial Project

Our expertise in the international transportation of oversized operational equipment to support our client’s operations.

The Challenge

Transporting oversized cargo presents unique challenges in logistics, often requiring specialized handling, effective communication with ground handlers, advance schedule planning, and booking for specialized tools, trucks, and equipment. In this case, our client, the world’s largest oil company based in Saudi Arabia, is involved in extensive oil exploration and production needed to transport generator equipment and machinery from Hamburg to Saudi Arabia. The equipment and machinery were packed in 26 oversized crates weighing over 400 tons, where the dimensions and weight exceeded standard shipping capabilities. Additionally, strict timelines and regulatory compliance added to the project’s complexity.

Morrison’s comprehensive capabilities were ready to develop a tailored solution for the cargo’s specific requirements – a project that required timely meticulous coordination and execution.

The Solution

To meet our client’s needs, the Morrison team devised a comprehensive solution leveraging our expertise in out-of-gauge (OOG) shipping. Each step was, time-sensitive, methodical and stringent.

Cargo Survey: We collaborated closely with the shipper in Germany to assess the cargo’s dimensions, weight, and cargo sensitivity, allowing us to design a customized transportation plan with our vendors and carriers

Vessel Selection: Utilizing our extensive network of carriers and partners, we arranged for a specialized breakbulk vessel capable of accommodating oversized crates. The vessel also needed to be equipped with the necessary lifting equipment to facilitate the loading and unloading of the OOG crates.

Documentation: We ensured all the necessary documentation, including the necessary permits and licenses, were accurate and complied with customs regulations.

Load Planning & Survey: An efficient loading plan was crucial in optimizing the utilization of the vessel’s below-deck space while maintaining stability during transit. A surveyor was appointed onsite to monitor and document every step of the loading process.

Arrival & Unloading: Upon arrival, the breakbulk vessel was carefully docked, and the oversized crates were safely unloaded using the vessel’s lifting equipment. Our commissioned dedicated teams of riggers and stevedores oversaw the safety and efficiency of the unloading process.

The Result

Our meticulous execution successfully transported all 26 oversized crates from Hamburg to Dammam, Saudi Arabia, within the transit time requirement. Despite the complexity of the freight operations, our dedicated team went through careful planning, precise coordination, and expert knowledge to ensure safe and timely delivery. Throughout the process, our logistical expertise, risk management, and effective communication were also critical to this mission.

At Morrison Express, we pride ourselves on delivering customized transportation solutions that exceed our clients’ expectations.
